You might not have noticed but everything seems to be doom and gloom these days. Something about a financial crisis. Thank god we've got golf to escape to, eh?
Not that our beloved game is likely to avoid the fallout from the mess that's seemingly pervading the entire planet but, for the moment, we at least have something to look forward to: our three biggest professional tournaments about to kick off this month.
As the bad economic news unfolds over coming months who knows what it will mean for the game at a professional level both here and overseas but in the meantime we have this opportunity to sit back and enjoy some world class golf in the lead up to Christmas.
I'm sure I said this last year and possibly the year before but for the benefit of those who might have missed it I'll say it again: do yourself a favour if you live anywhere near Huntingdale, Royal Sydney or Hyatt Coolum and get out and watch some of the world's best players up close over the coming weeks.
We don't get a very big window of opportunity to see the likes of Adam Scott, Geoff Ogilvy, Stuart Appleby and co in the flesh but I can assure you it's worth the price of admission.
Speaking of professional golf I highly recommend you read Rob Willis' trip down memory lane and his love of the Australian Open on pages six and seven this month. For those of us who'll never get to tee it up in an event of this calibre it's a terrific insight into what makes the touring pros tick and why certain tournaments bring out the best in players. One of your best, Rob, and look forward to seeing you at Royal Sydney.
Magazines love giveaways and we're no different. Considering Christmas is just around the corner (have they started with the decorations in the shops yet?) we thought this month would be a good time to up the ante. Check out page 22 for our November giveaway bonanza and throw your hat in the ring for one of the three great prizes we've got on offer this month.
Finally, I had the opportunity to play in a fundraising day for the Jack Newton Junior Golf Foundation last month and came away, as I always do, impressed not only with the kids coming through the program but the work the staff and sponsors put into making these organisations tick. In NSW it's Jack's foundation but all over the country there are others doing the same sort of hard work to ensure the future of the game with little in the way of recognition or thanks. So, a salute to all those involved in fostering junior golf such as the Stuart Appleby Foundation (Vic), Greg Norman Junior Golf (Qld), Mathew Goggin Foundation (Tas), Graham Marsh Foundation (WA) and all the associated volunteers and professionals who contribute. It is a great service you all do for the game.
